Types of Sewing Thread and their Uses
Types of Sewing Thread and their Uses
The market today is awash with a huge variety of thread types that are suitable for different uses, tasks, and applications. Some threads might be better suited for machine work, whereas others should only be used for delicate hand-stitching. Here at Discount Sewing, we offer a range of cotton, polyester, and viscose machine embroidery threads, alongside a comprehensive range of cotton, elastic, linen, nylon, overlocker, polyester, and silk machine sewing threads.
That’s all well and good, but if you aren’t sure what type of thread you should be using, read on for our tips on what to choose.
Getting Started
Before heading into the realms of the different types of thread available on the market, stop and consider the project that you are going to be completing. Think about the fabric, is it woven, knitted, light or heavy? Some sewers swear by matching the thread to the fabric (using cotton thread with cotton fabric, for example), and consider the colour too. You could either match the thread as closely as possible or opt for a decorative contrasting colour.
Polyester Thread
For many people, polyester is their everyday thread. Polyester threads are available in the widest colour variety, with brands such as Gutermann offering just about every shade that you could dream of. Discount Sewing are proud to offer a wide range of polyester machine sewing thread and polyester machine embroidery thread.
Polyester Machine Sewing Thread
Polyester machine sewing threads are available in a wide range of colours including greens, purples, silvers, golds and, of course, staple whites and blacks too.
Polyester Machine Embroidery Thread
Like sewing machine polyester thread, polyester embroidery machine thread is available in such a broad range of colours and types that you're spoiled for choice. The broad range available at Discount Sewing includes great value thread sets, decorative metallic threads and more.
Cotton Thread
Cotton thread is the ideal choice if you are sewing 100% cotton fabric, and as a result, this type of thread is most commonly used in patchwork and quilting projects. When compared to polyester, cotton has very little "give" and can be much weaker. Cotton, therefore, is best suited to delicate or lightweight projects where you want any stress on the material to cause the thread to break rather than tear the fabric. Discount Sewing are proud to offer a range of cotton machine sewing thread and embroidery machine sewing thread.
